Rules for the Rules Section

We all often find ourselves in situations on the course where we're not quite sure what the rules are. Invariably one, or more, of our playing partners are positive they know the rule because their cousin Bob always plays it that way. You play golf so you know exactly what I mean.

The point of Rules & Situations is to describe and discuss these situations with the intent of getting it right. Bring your situations, your solutions, and your Rule book. Don't be a cousin Bob.

Also, we may not be able to change the rules but that doesn't mean we have to like all of them. What's your better solution?

Don't forget, though, that the discussions are always more fun if there are 20 posts by people having a guess before the Rule book comes out!

You're absolutely right. The whole point of this section is see how everyone would handle a situation and then.........post the correct way.

Signed,

Cousin Bob

Hey ... don't make fun of my cousin Bob... he's a scratch golfer...

He hits the ball and then scratches like a baseball pitcher on TV...

I guess I don't understand this site

As I read t he rules of this site, which are admirable for the intent to keep things civil, I understand that rules questions are not to quote the actual answer to a question until people have had a chance to weigh in with their memories or understanding about what the answer should be.

People don't post their questions to test your knowledge, but to get an answer to their questions.

I think this is a diservice to the questioneer and reader to force them to read through the attempted answers of people who have not looked up the answer....they are after the answer to the rules question, not your memory says it is. Your memory may be faulty (they frequently are).

Shouldn't the answer be as close to correct as it can be? Not all answers will be correct, and there will be corrections, and that is how we learn the rules. We do not learn the rules by posting answers from memory.

Re: I guess I don't understand this site

Some of the questions tend to be a rules trivia type question, these are the ones that are left to banter about. If you have a question that you are looking for a fast answer to, just mention it in the original post and you will get answers very quickly.

I agree that if a poster specifically says that he or she doesn't want a series of guesses and speculations, but instead wants a fast answer, a fast answer will probably be forthcoming.

But I suspect that atticusfinch (like jcgolfpro) may be a person who's more likely to be able to provide a fast answer, and simply wants to do that.

Thoughts, anyone?

I try and avoid those threads so as not to ruin the discussion. I really like reading the answers though.

Re: Rules for the Rules Section

I've been reading them and monitoring them but have been refraining from posting until the bantering is done. However, if someone is looking for a direct answer to a question/situation, I will provide that to the best of my ability. Like those at TGC who like to brag about their test scores, mine is on file at PGA of America headquarters and it is high enough to be a PGA TOUR Rules Official (although I am not).

Re: Rules for the Rules Section

I think a sticky at the top of this thread with a link to the USGA website and Rule Book would be helpful!

I've always figured that if someone asks a question, they're looking for an answer--the right one. I guess I'm just not sophisticated enough to understand asking questions for the sake of asking questions. Or for taking as long as possible to give the correct answer.

Of course, some rules situations presented in these threads are so obviously attempts to stump the members that I can understand "the experts" allowing us to squirm for a bit.

Click on User CP on the top green bar, far left.
Under Control Panel on the left click Edit Avatar, 5th option down
Select Use Custom Avatar and Browse to wherever the picture is located on your PC
select it and Save. That should do it.
