Re: Interesting search results

Google brings up golf rewound 1st when I tried it. MSN.com's Bing search does too. I think the lesson here is not to use Yahoo's search engine.

Google and Yahoo! are different beasts. Google is a crawler, it searches the Web for ANYTHING remotely related. Yahoo! links are hand posted; i.e. it's not all on automatic. So it may take Yahoo! a bit longer to rank us.

And, last I checked, we're first on Yahoo!, too.

Actually, Yahoo and Google are quite similar. Yahoo has a search engine component with its own crawler/spider/bot that indexes web sites just like Google does. Yahoo also maintains a directory, which is the part containing listings posted and edited by humans. If a result in the Yahoo search is also found in the directory, many times data from the directory is used, or it may be used in the search algorithm to help determine ranking over similar sites that do not appear in their directory.

For many years Yahoo actually used Google to provide search results. Then they decided to do their own thing and bought Inktomi and Overture. They built a search engine based on those acquisitions and for the last few years have provided their own search.

At the end of July this year, Yahoo and Microsoft entered into an agreement to use Bing for Yahoo's search results. They've decided that they cannot throw the money at search to compete with Google like Microsoft can. They shall concentrate more on delivering content and acting as a web portal. Yahoo will also handle some of the advertising and pay-per-click revenue generating areas for both Bing and Yahoo.

Here's a good article covering some of this:
» The end of Yahoo! Search. Bing takes over.

Not a shocker: The site-names are only a minor typo removed from one another!

And the owner of 'the original' somehow has things worked out where his site is very 'findable'. Unfortunately, that's about the full extent of what he seems to do: He has let proper maintenance of many other aspects of his site slide.
