Re: *******Re-shaft your club Special*******
Christian,
Callaway Steelhead III fairway wood - any issues with doing a reshaft on a bore-through?

1) I am a senior and have never been fitted for a club. I have just changed my driver from a Titleist 909D2, 10.5*, right hand, reg flex, to a COBRA S9-1 10.5*, rh, REG. FLEX, with an Aldila AVS 50 gram. I can get it out there 225 to 250. I am wondering if I could upgrade the shaft that could give me another 25 yards? 2) I am 5'11", 160#s, and mid-teen handicapper. I am considering the Accuflex Assassin II or the Aldila Proto...but what do I know? Your advise is appreciated. |

I'll take a shot at your question...the answer is no...the shaft will help with distance if you were horribly fitted in the first place and the shaft overly stiff...outside of that you won't see much in terms of distance gains until you start to hit the ball harder and optimal launch angles and spin rates become an issue...if you still have a 25 yd variance on your driver then it's fundamental swing mechanics you need to work on...if you feel like you want more control, there are several different shafts that address different issues, but most would dampen distance somewhat for the control trade off... Hope it helps, but a lightweight flexy shaft will hit it long as anything...question as your swingspeed rises is whether or not it is in the short grass... Welcome!

(Darn, wasn't looking at posting date! You are absolutely right! TWO YEARS is a very long time.) Your reply, however, is much appreciated. I actually took the Cobra S9-1 out today for the 2nd time and amazed even myself at the result. On average, I must be about 15-20 years farther (shows on the score, too). The fact that I have never ventured into proper club fitting had me wondering if I could get a lot more from the new driver. I guess you have somewhat satisfied my curiousity. thanks! |
