Deleting Pages of old posts...

I don't know how/if this would affect people's post count or if they would care, but ...

In the lighter side, there are some topics with over a thousand posts already. Surely nobody is going to read all 1000 posts when they start reading one of those threads. Why don't we leave the first 10 or 15 posts (almost like a sticky) and then start auto-deleting posts 16-xxx once a topic post count gets up over 500 (or whatever number) to keep the topic at or around 500. That might help save DB space.

I enjoy some of the lighter side short posts, but I can see where that would eventually be a huge resource hog. And really...how many posts do you have to read to get the idea of how a topic works like Chain Reaction or 4 Words Only or TPBM?

Just a suggestion ... food for thought, if you will.

It would effect post count. We have plenty of disk space so it won't be a worry for quit a few years.

I'd suggest reading just the last page or so in some of those threads. That's all that's really necessary to participate in them. I know that's what I do. I'm pretty sure that you're only retrieving a page at a time, so resources aren't an issue at this point. Perhaps down the road that will change.

Actually, the reason I thought about this was because of the closed poll regarding padding post counts. Waz, you mentioned space becoming an issue if too many people started padding counts, so I thought this might help alleviate the potential for any issues in the future.

But you're right. I always just go to the last page and go from there (when viewing the lighter side threads).
