Jim Thorpe (senior tour) going to jail for tax evasion
OK, I read a little about this story when I first heard it a while ago, and he was on a Golf Channel interview with Rich Lerner this weekend, but evidently Jim Thorpe is going to jail for ~1yr. He owed something like $2 mill in back taxes, didn't pay it, but last year built a house for $2 mill and bought a $60,000 car. Rich asked if he thought the judge thought "gee, perhaps if he didn't buy such a big house or the car, he could have paid some of this off?"
I'm just amazed at someone who's been in this business a while and as he said, he got stupid about it. I think he said (wasn't paying close attention), that if he could 'get off' by paying $1 mill or so, he'd be able to come up with the money somehow, but since he didn't think he would 'get off', he'll just go to jail???
But...don't you still owe them the money afterwards too?
Dang, I really like this guy, always have (you have to love a golfer who looks like a linebacker), but I have no compassion for his situation given if he had to pay taxes of $2 mill, he must have been working off of much more revenue than that. True, I don't know what his financial situation is/was, but he didn't seem like he was broke.
