Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

For me my Pro Golf idol is Karrie Webb. She is always very consistent and is a very good driver. She is also a class act.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

I don't have a golf idol. There are some golfers that I respect / enjoy watching more than others, but I there is no golfer that I can single out as my idol. There isn't a golfer that I truly dislike either.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

Even though he's passed, I don't think I'll ever respect a golfer as much as I did Byron Nelson While I wouldn't deem anyone my "idol", I did have a great amount of respect for the man both for his on course accolades and his off-course behavior.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

Mine would be a composite...
Tiger for the sheer power and ability to blow away the competition
Freddie Couples for the smoothness and seeming inflappability
Jack Nicklaus for his demeanor and dominance
Lee Trevino for the love of the game

Neither one of these two is my idol and I really can not think of any golfer that is but there are two golfers that stand out to me and that I admire those two are Arnold Palmer, and Tom Kite I have had the pleasure of meeting both of these fine gentlemen.

Palmer and Trevino. For their games, but especially for their relationship with the fans. They both have always showed such a tremendous respect and awareness for the people who made them famous and wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.

Tiger for his dominance and the fact that he would be tops in the handful that I would actually be a bit nervous to talk to...

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

I would have two - Bobby Jones; for his respect of the game calling penalities on himself etc. and his attitude about the course challenging the player.

The other would be Chris Dimarco. I just think his swing & golf course management is similar to my game (except he shoots about 25 strokes better than me every round).

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

Moved to the proper forum....

Arnie-For his rapport with the fans...no one has ever been better.

Tiger-For the brilliance of his game and depth of his accomplishments in such a short time (not that he's the greatest, though....yet)

Bobby Jones-For the aura. The footage from his era is sparse and generally poor. It'd be cool to see more of him. Plus, he helped create Augusta National.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

I admire several different golfers, each for different reasons.
Tiger for his ability to hit seemingly any shot at any time.
Arnie for bringing the game to the masses
Jack for his longevity and durbaility
Bobby Jones for his grace

Right now I like Luke Donald, Trevor Immelman and Mike Wier even though he's struggling and of course Mickelson. Gotta love the lefties

Never had a golf idol, per se, but I grew up watching Jack and now enjoy watching both Tiger and Lefty. I always find golf on TV more interesting when I get to watch either of those two.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

It is so easy to choose Tiger Woods for his sheer domination. I respect him for the amount of drive and determination that he has in each shot (he really tries to sink it in the hole from any shot except the driver). He works very hard at all levels of the game.

For the modern day golfers, it is a tie with Vijay Singh who works very hard and uses fitness to elevate his game.

For the 'pioneers', I like Ben Hogan - He worked hard and tried to convey his love of the game to his readers. His teaching on fundamentals has built the framework of modern golfers of this era. He had a lot of class both on and off the course and his sense of style was impeccable. On top of that, despite a near career ending accident in 1949, he went on to win 2 Masters and 2 US Opens - That is determination. He exeplifies the Human Spirit.

Mr Arnold PAlmer - the man has such class
Payne Stewart - for the same reason
Darren Clarke - because of his approach to adversity

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

I admire everything about Faldo's game. His work ethic was every bit as good as Vijay and Hogan. He was a machine. He wasn't there to make friends, or fans, just to win.

I also admire him for the way he totally rebuilt his swing from the ground up. Most pros talk about a swing change, but you can't tell the difference. His changed from the ground up.

I also admire Jack. He didn't have the single minded spirit of Faldo, but I admire him because he was able to be so dominant and still have a family and other interests.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

If there was a swing I would want to have, it would be Phil's. Since I'm a lefty, he's been the guy I have always wanted to emulate. However, I probably would not emulate his mental game most of the time. If I could play a round with any pro, I would choose Phil over Tiger any day of the week.

I idolize no one.. but if I did, it would not be a pro golfer, but the one and only Alice Cooper. Golf has kept him
in the right frame of mind.. simply put... it helps keep him away from the bad liquid that nearly killed him a ways back. . . . . . . . .

Stange choice? Maybe. Maybe not.

Re: Who would you consider to be Your Pro Golf Idol & Why?

I would have to say Jack Nicklaus. I was first introduced to golf while watching it on TV, sitting in my father's lap. My father so admired Jack, always pulled for him to win and I guess it rubbed off on me. Although I did not play golf at the time, I learned the game by having my father explain it while we watched the tournaments. I followed Jack's career until the end and he epitomized the ideal golfer to me.

For me its Gary Player, the Jack Lalanne of the PGA. Like Arnold Palmer, Gary Player has always shown his love for the game and respect to his fans. He has also built educational institutuions and created employment opportunities for the people of South Africa. I wish I could have watched him play in his prime. I guess the old Golf Channel footage will have to do.
