I actually agree with this. He used to always lead in top-10s, now he doesn't.

I still think he can put up 2-3 wins a year until hes 50, and maybe a few more majors.

Re: The Fall Of Vijay Singh

.

Vijay kept it together and even though his nerves were showing (especially in his putting), he hung in there and closed the deal, despite the fact that if the cup on the eighteenth were a quarter of an inch smaller, we may have been treated to a three-way playoff instead.

I like Vijay and I love his swing, but I wonder what might have been different if Tiger was there and Phil didn't do his (now very predictable) crash and burn act on the last few holes. But Vijay deserves his props and for a guy who sees fifty peeking at him from around the corner, I think he's very competitive as long as his putting holds up, which is obviously his Achilles heel.

But like they say, a "W" is a "W".

I don't know that it was necessarily nerves with the putting, but he sure did struggle. Just shows what a great ballstriker he is to go 9 of 19 from 4 to 8 feet and still win.

Re: The Fall Of Vijay Singh

In terms of his Official World Golf Ranking, this victory was huge for the once-mighty Vijay. He stops the bleeding by vaulting from #15 to #4.

I will be watching with great interest to see how Vijay fares at the PGA Championship, and during the four-tournament stretch of the FedEx Cup Play-Offs.

Re: The Fall Of Vijay Singh

I think Vijay's still pretty mighty - he's 4th on the money list, and he has two seconds, a third and 6 top-10's in 17 events:

PGATOUR.com - Player Stats Information

He's almost a victim of his own success - you win 9 times one year, and you can just never live up to that again.

I wouldn't call that mighty. It's not bad, mind you, but mighty is what Tiger is, or what Vijay was between 2003-2005.

Nah, I still like picking on Phil.

Sometimes he can be such a **** when it comes to closing the deal. But I do like his, "People who..." commercials.

Ernie just looks like he wants to cry most of the time.

Uh, so much for the fall of Vijay Singh, eh?

I think he's the honest number 2 in the world. Phil wins in spite of himself; Vijay is still the only top guy besides Tiger capable of seizing a big tournament and blowing away the field.

It will be interesting to see how long this "mind over matter/I'm the greatest putter in the world" thing works for him because when VJ is putting decently he can beat anyone including Tiger. Too bad he's 45 instead of 35.

Why? VJ is considerably better at 45 than he was at 35. I appreciate the man for what he is and more golf fans should do the same.

Because we'd have more years to enjoy watching him play as a competitive force at the highest level. I do appreciate VJ. He's one of my favorite golfers. He has an inner arrogance that drives him. He's not afraid to speak his mind. He has a very good, dry sense of humor. And he's also one of the few guys who doesn't melt at the prospect of staring down Tiger. But with VJ it always comes down to the putter. And he knows it. But I don't think he lets it get to him. When something stops working he just tries something else... long putter, short putter, left hand low... whatever. Now it's the power of positive thinking and more power to him. With his conditioning and work ethic, I expect him to be competitive for another 5 years or so.

Indeed. And I couldn't be more thrilled. After Phil, Vijay is probably my second favorite golfer.

I got a kick out of going through this thread and reading some of the responses. Seems that several people here were beginning to write the great Vijay off, and with good reason. How many 45+ year old golfers have continued to be among the game's elite?

Right on, Waz! And of course Wildbore remained solidly behind his man.

Yea, I got a few things right.

Unfortunately for Singh, Tiger wasn't in the field so his ranking didn't go up as much as it could have.

Ditto for me after Tiger. The thing about Vijay is, because he isn't the best player in the world, nothing was made of his swing changes. Granted, it's more his putter than his swing between a good week and a bad one, but I think he's rounding everything into form, will win the FedEx Cup (duh, bold prediction, I know), and will have a phenomenal 2009.

Vijay is a great golfer, but I doubt I will ever respect the guy as a human being.

But good to hear he's playing well . . . . . I guess.
