The spirit of the bet was the same as the letter of the bet. At the time the bet was made Padraig was several spots outside the top 10.

Agreed, but someone did step up while Tiger was away, which is what you were talking about. That you then restricted that to people who were currently in the top ten was very astute on your part, but not really necessary at the time.

It was necessary to win the bet. A bet that I noticed you didn't want a piece of.

No offense to Padraig and his great run in the last two majors but playing #16, #17, and #18 against Sergio and his wonderful putter isn't quite in the same golf universe as battling Tiger coming down the stretch.

Again, Padraig earned his victories but I know you're all thinking it.......Would he have won had Tiger been in the field in the last two majors? Would he have won had he and Tiger gone head to head instead of Sergio? We'll see if Mr. Harrington can continue his major championship winning ways when Tiger tees it up again.

It's great that Padraig has stepped up and won and I look forward to seeing if he can be the Tiger killer so many have been looking for for so long.

If I recall Tiger was in the field at Carnoustie last year.

Or maybe it only counts if Tiger has his "A game" or is it his "B+ or better game" ?

We should also put an asterisk next to all of Nicklaus's majors because Tiger wasn't in the field in those either.

Grade Tiger all you want. I'll just say "scoreboard." Or maybe scorecard is a better word here.

Tiger isn't going to win every major but not many players have won majors while playing in the same group as Tiger on Sunday. My point is that it's a whole different ball game battling Tiger down the stretch than it is battling Sergio.

Padraig is a great champion and I hope to see him go head-to-head with Tiger in a major soon.

The scoreboard at Carnoustie read

1 - Padraig Harrington
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
12 Tiger Woods

No one's ever had the lead playing in the same group on Sunday with Tiger at a major either.

So Harrington has done something Tiger has never done in a major... come from behind and take it on Sunday. And he's done it 3 times.

All the more reason to see how it plays out when they are a stroke or two apart on Sunday in a major.

FWIW...

Tiger was 2 behind Padraig at Carnoustie heading into the final round. He fell 3 more strokes behind him on Sunday.

A 65, which was shot or bettered by 3 guys that Sunday all of whom also finished ahead of Tiger, would have put him into the playoff.

Re: Bums of the Month

Crikey, poor ole Harrington just can`t win here!

So....to re-cap...if Harrington wins a major with Tiger in the field, it doesn`t really count as Tiger wasn`t good enough to stay within `x` shots of him, (so that they could conveniently be paired together for the back nine on Sunday !)

Alternatively, if Harrington wins when Tiger is not in the field that doesn`t stand out either, because he only had the likes of Sergio to beat on the back nine on a Sunday.

The only time I can recollect Harrington and Tiger being paired together on a Sunday was in Japan in 2006.....when they both shot 67`s and Harrington went on to win the play-off! Harrington is actually a much better player now than back then, but I suppose that match would also not count, because it wasn`t a major!

That about sums it up. Thanks for the recap C-B-C.
