It was the fractures, not the knee

I've seen many posts on this site, and many stories, confuse the issue.

Tiger was grimacing due to his double fractures on his tibis, not his ACL tear. He grimaced on good and bad shots alike, and limped his way around 91 holes, and is amazing for his determination. But we knew that already.

The fractures wouldn't consistently give him shooting pain, just when he tensed his leg on a certain angle-which is why it wasn't after every shot. He often tried to hide the pain by making it look like he was looking for his tee, while he was waiting for the pain to subside.

The ACL was an issue he played with for a long time, and has been giving him discomfort especially for the last 9-10 months, during which he won many tournaments. He would have been smarter to have postponed his April op. till after the PGA and missed the Ryder Cup, while decreasing his play this year, and spending more time on the boat/ship he has. He would have had good mobility for 3 majors.

By having the op, and little time for rehab, he over-did his comeback effort and got two stress fractures. I suspect that in his running or weights he was compensating for the injury and placed more stress on the tibia.

I agree with his decision to play on the tibia injury (once he realised he had it) for the US Open, then shut it down for the rest of the year. The tibia will take 4-20 weeks before he has full strength again. He has his 1 major for a decent year. He could also get his knee operated on and enjoy the summer.

He must have been absolutely desperate to win and salvage a feeling of achievement for the year. That showed in his efforts. The old saying that you have to be close to be lucky is shown very clearly in his US Open win in 2008.

There is very little doubt that he will be back strong and ready to exceed 20 majors.

He should also gain mentally from a break as he hasn't had a good long one yet, and it'll give him some more perspective. Wonder if we see another baby on the way? His first is super cute.

Now he can come back next year, win all four majors, get recognition for a "proper" Grand Slam, and tie Jack's record in the process.
