With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

With Tiger out for the rest of the year and two Majors to go, does anyone break through and finally get a Major?

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

I'm going to go with Adam Scott....I just think he is the best player to not have won a Major, and will get it done at one of the two left this year.

Cink will win the PGA Champ.
I don't have a pick yet for The British Open

I would like to see that. Actually, I would love to see Mickelson redeem himself after his terrible go-round at Oakland Hills for the Ryder Cup by winning the PGA. It would be great for golf if the 2nd and 4th best players of this generation were to step up in the best's absence.

If we're talking first-timers, my money would be on Sergio to break through at Birkdale.

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

I'm a little heavy, so I shy away from going out on a limb, unless it's attached to ginormous redwood. But I have a few guys in mind that I do believe could benefit from not having to look over their shoulders.

Cink --steady player, has had the game to win a major for a number of years. I just question his desire sometimes. He seems quite comfortable cashing in those good showings. But he could certainly pull out a win in the PGA.

Stricker -- worked his butt off to get his game back. Sentimental favorite more than anything.

Justin Leonard -- definitely positioning himself to be a contender on a regular basis again. Seems to have found something over the past year, and could definitely find himself staring down the back nine on a Sunday to win another major if he can continue playing with the same level of confidence he's found this season.

Sergio -- this British Open (imo) is his biggest chance yet. Not having Tiger in the field alone won't be enough, but sooner or later you have to figure that someone with his level of talent will win. The timing could be perfect.

There are a number of guys who are worth mentioning, but these guys are certainly capable.

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

I'm looking for a breakthrough from Justin Rose or Paul Casey...Sergio and Phil might benefit from Tigerless fields more than others...he seems to be in their heads more than he might be in others...

On a more serious note, I agree with Card. I think Sergio wins The Open. And I think I'll win a major before Stewart Cink does.

Sergio has a remarkable record in the British Open, and it seems he is becoming more and more confident with his putter. He's a good pick for Birkdale.

I have a feeling we'll see a first-time winner at Oakland Hills. Kenny Perry and Stewart Cink are great picks.

Of course, I would absolutely love to see Phil win his fourth major. As a Phil Phan, I think the British Open has become the most important championship Phil can play, for the rest of his career.

And I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Vijay Singh win another major. I still believe he has the game to do it. He just needs to figure out his putting.

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

I don't know. Guys have won their first major even when Tiger was here, and even over Tiger on Sunday (Johnson, Cabrera). It certainly gives guys more of a fighting chance, but I don't know if Tiger being out will mean Scott, or The Serge, or a relative no-namer will win their first just because he is out. I am hoping for Adam Scott to win one, he's quickly catching The Serge for best to never win a Major. And if I was warranting a guess, it would be Scott, but I thought he'd win one this year to begin with, Tiger or no Tiger.

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

What we very well might end up seeing over the course of the next 10 months is just how wide that gap is between Tiger and Phil, and how narrow that gap is between Phil, Sergio, Scott, or any other list of players who are in what really is the prime of their careers.

Re: With Tiger out - who gets their first Major?

I think the "Tiger Factor" will allow someone to close a Major, that wouldn't, if he was there.

I think Lee Westwood could win at Birkdale as could any of the Europeans.
Els with his "Winning" caddie back on the bag could also feature.

I think one of the nearly men of the US will win the PGA.

And for the Ryder Cup.
Its been mentioned here in the UK that without Tiger in the team the others may not be looking at one person to win the points so could perform as a TEAM better and who knows reach 14pts.

The way they've been going 10 would be an accomplishment. 14.5 seems a long way away from their reach after watching the last two.

Jeez, Waz, what did Stewart Cink ever do to you?

Methinks that Kenny Perry will win his first major within the next year. I have always had my doubts about Sergio in anything but the Ryder Cup (but maybe that's just me)...and as much as I like and respect Vijay's accomplishments as well as his WORK ETHIC, I think that we can stick a fork in him: he's done. He's 45 years old and I don't see him "pulling a Nicklaus" and winning a major at his age especially with some of the young guns that are on the tour.
