What's up with Phil?

What's up with Phil? Is he going to play again in the US before the WGC at Firestone?

Re: What's up with Phil?

It may be me but the tour elite seem to be playing less and less each year. I guess if I made 25+ million per year I would take a little time off and lay around the house too. Wait, I already do that and don't make 25+ million a year. I can see a time when the elite players only play the majors, invitationals and the WGC events.

Re: What's up with Phil?

Phil is getting up there. He doesn't want to wear himself out on meaningless tourneys. To put it in perspective if you're making $40,000 a year would you travel somewhere to play in a hundred dollar tournament?

Uh, yep. If someone were willing to pay me $100 to go play golf tomorrow, my behind would be there.

It's not about being paid to just play golf. The catch is.......you have to play extremely well.

If you were playing for a million dollars in three weeks why would you want to play for a hundred dollars this week?

There's never a tour event under a million now, is there? No matter, Phil never has to play again if he doesn't want to. I sure hope he is preparing extensively again!

You mean a million this week? I don't believe there's an event on the PGA Tour that hands out a Ben Franklin to the winner.

It doesn't cost Phil $5,000,000 to get to a tournament. At least keep your examples consistent.

Re: What's up with Phil?

Okay, so let's make the example more close to home. Whatever your profession...let's assume you make $104,000 a year to do it ($2000/week). If someone told you you could take a one week unpaid vacation from your current job to go make UP TO $2000 working for them for the week, would you do it? And you had to pay your own expenses to get there and you weren't reimbursed for any expenses...NOW would you do it?

Technically, Phil's not guaranteed any money, but he also isn't making money by not playing on the Tour (I know he still gets his endorsement money, though).

I know we think it's great to get paid to play golf, but that is this guy's profession. This is his WORK. Yes, he loves it and I think it shows, but it's a nice thing to be able to take a break from your work sometimes and I think that's just what he likes to do. Take some time off and prepare for the next major. At this point he certainly isn't worried about where the next paycheck is coming from and will he be able to pay the bills.

Re: What's up with Phil?

He's fat and lazy like the rest of the "bums" in League's thread...same as MW...if you can still make a handsome living and sponsors back you on a part time schedule, then the real question here is why play in the less visible events when you can fulfill your sponsor commitments and maintain your ranking...why push yourself? WGC events, tune ups to majors, the majors themselves, Player's, Fed Ex Cup and a couple overseas tournaments with hefty appearance fees will soon be the schedule of all the top players...if it isn't already...and when looking at it that way, why shouldn't it be?

That's all well and good, but not at all what I was responding to, which was this:

To answer the original question....no. Phil's next tournament will be at Loch Lomond, followed by the championship at Royal Birkdale. Then Firestone.

Re: What's up with Phil?

How many of you guys have travelled to Europe, or Hawaii for that matter.
"Jet Lag" seems to hit more travelling West to East so Phil may be in Ireland this week, play Loch Lomond next week, then The Open in UK time.
I always found sleeping Trans-Atlantic did not stop Jet Lag.

You're talking about me paying $500 to go play golf for $100. Phil is playing golf for $1,000,000. Get your calculator out and get back to me.

Right so where does the $5,000,000 come from ?

You're asking me if I'd pay $500 to travel to a tournament to play for $100, which makes no sense. Phil is playing for $1,000,000 when he tees it up, not $100, and it doesn't cost him $5,000,000 to travel to the tournament - the relative equivalent in travel expenses in the example you gave for me. Therefore your example don't work.

No, I wouldn't pay $500 to go play for $100. Phil doesn't have to pay $5,000,000 to go play for $1,000,000, so the example is moot.

The $5,000,000 reference is your figure. I never said that. Or inferred that.

Very valid point...of course when I visit home it is exactly 12 hours difference so East/West, doesn't really matter...I can't figure how guys like Player who flew all around the world on a regular basis could handle the airtravel...my muscles are stiff for a week after a long flight...
