Johhny Miller comes up big-Bobby Jones and Tiger

Bobby Jones' name was brought up during last weeks telecast and Miller says 'in his prime he would have given Tiger all he could handle and then some'. How do you Tiger lovers feel about that? Jones drove the ball 300 yds back in his day-what would he do with todays equipment? Alot of Tiger fans are Jack Haters, but Jones was the one who was the best of all time-GRAND SLAM!!

Re: Johhny Miller comes up big-Bobby Jones and Tiger

It's impossible to say of course, but Jones was easily the best of his time. Who's to say he couldn't compete with Tiger if he were born in 1970 ? Golf greatness, unlike other sports, has never been dependent on "bigger, stronger, faster" ... all of the attributes that improve with each generation. Tiger's feats of strength on the golf course are legendary but virtually irrelevant when assessing his greatness.

Re: Johhny Miller comes up big-Bobby Jones and Tiger

It feels like I am watching the Rocky Balboa movie all over again, yet this time it seems to have a plot!

I would love to see what Bobby Jones could do with modern day equipment and training. The man basically played golf as a hobby and was dominant. Don't you just wish you could build a time machine and hand Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Sam Snead a Cobra LV4 with a Matrix Ozik shaft?

Dream pairing for me would be Tiger, Bobby Jones, Jack, and Ben Hogan. The golf knowledge would just ooze.

Let's see...
Bobby told Jack that he (Jack) played a game with which he (Bobby) was not familiar,
and in 2000 Jack in turn said the same thing about Tiger. So I'll take it from them.

Re: Johhny Miller comes up big-Bobby Jones and Tiger

.

So if Bobby Jones had a modern driver and a modern ball, he would do what? Hit drives over 500 yards or something? I doubt it. What made him great and what made Jack great and what makes Tiger great are the ways in which each of them approach the game from a strategic and cognitive point of view.
Like a Grandmaster at a chessboard, it doesn't matter if he has to move the pieces by hand or levitate them telepathically, what makes him a Grandmaster is the way in which he strategizes and "sees" the board, not the modernity of the equipment or the way in which it is employed.

There are players on tour today who regularly eclipse Tiger in overall driving distance, or in overall putting stats, or greens in reg., or fairways, yet none of them have ever risen to his level nor do they threaten him on any regular basis. So it stands to reason that when it comes to playing this game on Jones', Jack's or Tiger's level, equipment has little to do with success. So it must be something else and that something else must be "the five and a half inches between the ears", as Jones so eloquently pointed out years ago.

Or to put it in simpler terms: "It ain't what you got, it's how you use it".

These little scenarios are fun to dream up, for sure. Could you imagine how entertaining and thrilling it would be to see these four, magically zapped onto Cypress Point, in their primes, battling each other in Match Play?

YES, I DO know about the above quotes-and I expected that you would use them. I have gathered that Tiger fans are staunch in their loyalism and ridiculous in accepting how good or great other players from the past have been. Why? These people-who yell 'get in the hole' as soon as their fantasy god has made contact with the ball know NOTHING about golf-they just know who Tiger is. Alot of Tiger fans are VERY annoying to actual (golf before Tiger) golf fans.

And all tiger haters are very annoying to us real golf fans. Is it because he's black?

A real golf fan would know that Tiger Woods is not the only player these golf idiots yell "Get in the Hole" at.

Not to mention that it has been going on since before 1997

So what are you to the rest of us? Because you are about the most annoying thing I've ever come across...

So far the only thing you "know" is that:

a) we're all Tiger fans
b) we're all 28 handicaps
c) none of us were fans of golf before Tiger
d) none of us know anything about golf

And seeing as you're wrong on all four counts... hmmm...

In fact, come to think of it, you've posted absolutely nothing of substance, only incorrect assumptions about everyone else here. So perhaps you can share with us the vast wealth of golf knowledge you've used to become an 11 handicap with nothing else to do but insult a bunch of people you know nothing about.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's just intrigued beyond description at what we might be able to glean from you...

Re: Johhny Miller comes up big-Bobby Jones and Tiger

In actuality, huskyhater is a closet Tiger groupie, he really wants to talk Tiger 24/7 but in fear of being recognized as a Tiger groupie, he talks Tiger in negative light so that he can get his fill.

Of all his posts, I don't think I've seen him talk about other players, it's all about Tiger for huskyhater.
