Should Adamonis have laid up in the playoff?

Just wondering what your guys' thoughts were. I think he should have punched/pitched out and played for par, make Kenny make birdie to win it. Especially after watching Kenny - wait, do we have a choke emoticon around here? - on the 72nd hole. He looked like me, making bogey from just off the green.

Anyway, Brad was the first pro I ever followed for a round on the PGA Tour, at the Buick at Westchester in '03, so I was glad to see him up there. What do you think he should have done?

Re: Should Adamonis have laid up in the playoff?

Even before he hit the shot, I thought he should've laid up. If the ball had been on a flat lie, or even ball below his feet, going for it might've been an option. But, with the ball above his feet and the wind blowing right-to-left, I thought lay up.

His caddy also did a poor job in this situation. He didn't sound like someone who'd been on Adamonis' bag very long. The mic was on and the caddy was heard saying, "if you think you have that shot, go ahead." WOW! Nice vote of confidence there! Not that the caddy should've talked him out of it. But, he coould've discussed the other options and then, regardless of the decision, stated something positive.

Yeah, that was classic, wasn't it?

I would have laid up, myself. Make the other guy make birdie. If he does, hats off to him. But don't try a miracle shot and hand it to the other guy when the miracle doesn't occur. Made for fun viewing, however.

Seve once said "Why lay up, you may put the next one in the water".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Kenny's first attempt at chipping on the 72nd hole, I thought he was only about 1-1.5 feet off the edge of the green?... I would have putted from there.

That's why we're amateurs and he's not. He missed that shot but he hasn't been missing many lately.

Putting vs Chipping from off the green has to take into account how smoothe grass between the ball and the green. There were probably some inconsistencies that he didn't want the ball to touch.

It also should take into account that he bladed the one before it, too

I think he did the right thing- after all he only needed to be a few feet to the right and it would have been a perfect shot. He probably figured Perry would birdie from where he was anyway.

Re: Should Adamonis have laid up in the playoff?

I saw a 'Lessons from the Pro's" on the Golf Channel the other day. The announcer was prompting questions to get answers from the pro. On one shot, the pro was about 8 feet off the green and the flag was about 20 feet across the green, albeit on tight fairway that led right up to the green. The announcer said, "what, you're taking a putter out?". The Pro said, well, you can chip it, and maybe get it within 6-8 feet 8 out of 10 times, but the smart thing to do is use a putter, when permitting, that will get you there 10 out of 10 times. Now for the life of me, I can't remember who the Pro was, arrggghhh.
