Butch Harmon vs. John Daly, again.

Golf Channel today had a lengthy J.D. interview where he says "I wish Butch wouldn't have said those lies about me....it literally killed my career" or some such. Then they went to Butch with the "he said/she said" bait for the replay.

Amazing to hear J.D. talk about all the misfortunes and how he's had to play hurt all this time....I wonder if lugging around 350 lbs or more contributes to that, along with all the smokes, etc., and lack of practice?

I'd say the drinking, late nights, gambling, and divorces had something more to do with it than Butch. Yet they seem happy in the Winn grip commerical. Of course, that may be due to Natalie.

John Daly - The Golf Channel's version of Brittany Spears. It is like watching a train wreck. You know you're gonna see bad stuff, but you just can't look away.

Ever noticed how much JD resembles Larry the cable guy???

What career ? The one as circus sideshow hero to the Joe 6-packs of the world ? There's nothing Harmon could say that would hurt that appeal. He sure hasn't shown recently that he has much of a career in front of him actually playing golf. Hard to see how all of those free weekends he's had lately are Butch's fault either.

Yeah, J.D. only has himself to blame for his play. You can only live that lifestyle for so long before it catches up with you.

Yeah, we don't see their inside hands in that one side-by-side-by-side shot, do we?

And for the record, JD said it made it tough for him to get exemptions, not that it ruined his career. This story has enough fluff to it without "reporting inaccuracies"

Re: Butch Harmon vs. John Daly, again.

I love what J.D. said when asked if it was hot this time of year in Arkansas:

"yea, its hot, and I can play golf down there without my shirt on and no one will take pictures of me".

Re: Butch Harmon vs. John Daly, again.

But I do believe the guy who was asking Butch "I'm sure by now you heard what J.D. has said, that you ruined his career" or something close to that...I didn't get to see the entire J.D. sequence, but I saw the Butch interview. I guess I'll be seeing it again before the day is over and I'll look for the exact wording.

Harmon hurt Daly's career about as much as Dan Akroyd hurt John Belushi's.

Haven't seen the interview yet, but I can just imagine J.D. saying such. Nobody has killed his career but himself. If it weren't for John's outgoing personality and the proclivity of people like the late Eli Callaway to give people like J.D. a second chance after second chance after second chance, his career would have been over long ago. He's had more second chances than Steve Howe or Darryl Strawberry. I suspect that its hard not to like J.D. on some level ----I mean he is more affable than a lot of huys on the tour----but he has just really squandered a lot of money and I think, a lot of his God given ability to play the game. The quote in my signature below that is attributed to George Best could just as easily been attributed to J.D. The guy doesn't need a golf coach as much as he needs a guardian! It's sad really.

Here's what he said, indeed in the context of getting exemptions:

Quote:
Daly about Harmon: 'I think his lies kind of destroyed my life for a little bit.'
This is the kind of stuff that happens when you choose a coach only because of his location!

I agree with you JG. I made this point a few months back when Harmon first mouthed off about Daly. Everything Harmon said is likely 100% true, and could probably have served as a wake-up call for JD. But I always have issues with athletes, coaches, etc. speaking to the media about someone else's business. Saying, "John Daly and I will not continue to work together due to personal reasons," would have been sufficient.

Harmon is obviously a wonderful coach, but he's always come across as a slug and a blow-hard to me.

Exactly my point. Everyone is riding the "beat ole' JD into the ground" wagon these days. Let the man be. I am well aware that he's tuned to the fact that he has issues. If he wants to fix them, that is up to him and to those close to him, not the media and not us.

Really, until he actually hurts someone besides himself and his career, let the guy be. He's accomplished more in golf than 99.72% of the people that say he's a wasted talent.

Didn't Butch have a battle of words in the media with Tiger a few years ago. Looks like he is choosing softer targets these days.

Re: Butch Harmon vs. John Daly, again.

Actually, John opened his mouth first in his interview about "his lies have just about ruined my life a little", etc. Not that I like Butch, but that put Butch in a position when asked "did you hear what J.D. said about you....." to have to respond. John could have avoided that by side skipping the topic altogether, imo.

And Butch could have avoided it a couple months ago instead of calling him out on being an alcoholic. FWIW, I think it's just poor business, and in poor taste, to bad mouth a former customer of yours to the public.

Tony Romo could have shot better than + 29 and he's not a pro golfer. JD's blaming Butch is pathetic. Can you imagine if John never drank and practiced diligently .... He could have become the second most loved sports indivdual next to Babe Ruth.

I think they're both acting like 8th grade BFF girls who had a fight and are trying to get everyone else on their side. Do we really care about this?
