Wie and poor decision-making

I thought Michelle was turning the corner on the poor decisions with regards to her schedule. I like her and I do want her to succeed but this PGA TOUR experiment has to be stopped. Are her parents still pulling the strings here? I have to think that a lot of the guys playing the Reno-Tahoe are rolling their eyes and hoping she's not in their group.

Wie's previous poor decisions have left her very few options for playing professional golf in the USA for the remainder of 2008. Unfortunately, the PGA Tour is one of those options.

The circus is back in town.

Re: Wie and poor decision-making

Admittedly, I don't follow female athletics, but it is rather difficult to avoid finding out about Michelle's foibles. It's getting a little ridiculous.

I have noticed, though, that Michelle seems rather immature, even at 18. And her father seems...how can I say this nicely...mentally challenged. This is a lethal combination.

Michelle has all the talent in the world, really. A more mature Michelle would literally destroy the LPGA Tour, and, as I have contended in the past, actually compete admirably on the PGA TOUR. She may still, later.

As for next week's Reno-Tahoe Open, I think that's going to be a tough course for Michelle. It is just about 7,500 yards long, with severe elevation changes. It also tends to play hard and fast because of the combination of warm temperatures and relatively lower humidity. She'll probably miss the cut.

Don't go out on a limb and make any bold predictions, Droogy. I think it's pretty safe to say she'll miss the cut. I think it would be miraculous if she actually made the cut. I expect her to finish well down ... probably 100 or worse.

How is she immature. She has always acted more mature than other girls her age.

Her father has a PhD, what are your qualifications? Let me guess, you have a PhD in pulling unfounded criticisms out of thin air.

She is far from immature, please provide a few examples of where she has been immature and people might believe you.

In terms of decision-making, it would be a stupid decision of her not to show up at the Renoe-Tahoe.

It plays about 7000 with the elevation changes, which would be one of the shorter PGA courses. Hard and fast is good since the roll will give her more distance and her accuracy will be rewarded.

Yea, she "might" miss the cut. Wise prediction, given she is coming off a near-win and the field at the Renoe-Tahoe is garbage.

Keep that "garbage" comment in mind when Wie misses the cut.

All the PHD's in the world will not make you a good father. I'm not saying BJ isn't a good father, I'm saying that the decisions made by "Team Wie" have put her in the position she's currently in. You can draw you own conclusions.

Under the theory that 'any exposure is good exposure', perhaps she feels that this is the least she can do to pay back her $MM sponsors?

I think that her thinking factored little into the decision...

Please see - GeoffShackelford.com - "She actually plopped herself onto the grass and sat cross-legged in the middle of the fairway, fingering one of the dolls that dangled from her golf*bag."

This happened last year, but I think that it is very immature to ignore your pro-am partners. I'm not saying you have to cater to their every whim, but the report above described her as "barely interacted with her caddie or playing partners."

And sitting down in the middle of the fairway while some of your partners are playing in order to play with the dolls dangling off your golf bag? Not exactly the model of maturity.

Never mind that whole WD to avoid the consequences of the rule of 88 thing last year. No one knows for sure how much of it was contrived versus an actual injury, but the evidence doesn't look good for her. The hushed meetings between her parents, her agent, and an LPGA tour official, the fact that she showed no pain or discomfort throughout the round according to observers and her playing partners, the fact that the Rule of 88 was being discussed according to people who overheard her. And then the big one, her out practicing on the range the very next day with no brace or obvious discomfort. It sure looks like she was trying to skirt the rule. And if so, that's a very immature decision. The mature decision there is to finish your round and accept the consequences of whatever you card.

There is a significant amount of evidence that demonstrates she does have some immaturity. Obviously, what one person calls immature another may not, so each person's own judgment comes into play. I would personally call some of her behavior immature. And, I think that everyone everywhere has had some immature moments, Michelle included. Hers have just been more public than mine or yours.

Re: Wie and poor decision-making

I understand she has used up all but one of her exemptions on the LPGA but can't she still play on the Futures tour? It would make much more sense for her to play where she can win and not be out on tour with the men when she knows she has little chance of making the cut, much less winning. Whoever is making the decisions for her is doing a very poor job of preparing her for a career in golf. Like someone said before, she's more of a side show act and it's getting pretty old.

Re: Wie and poor decision-making

If she feels so compelled to play the men, then why doesn't she at least try a venue she has a better chance, like the Nationwide tour, or even smaller venue (i.e., the Tar-Heel tour). Good golly, playing the opposite field event to the Major PGA tourney is not an easy task...those guys are still good, as are the guys on the Nationwide Tour..

Therefore, one can conclude through the transitive property that if Wie misses the cut against a field of garbage, that Wie is worse than garbage. Boy, WB, you'd better hope she makes the cut or you just dissed your idol.

The only chance that she wants is the chance to maintain her profile as a marketable icon...not going to do that with a top 10 in a coulda, shoulda, woulda tour event...

Wie is near the cut line, not in last place like some of you predicted.

Hopefully she makes the cut.

And then they played the second day.

She just finished at 8 over for the day and a smooth T122 with the afternoon groups yet to play. And I don't know who you were referring to, but *I* never said last place...but I did predict she wouldn't be in the top 100 (on some thread). And it looks like I just might be right about that.

Now about that group of trash she's playing against. It looks like the garbage players of the PGA tour are still better and more consistent than your idol. She played fairly decent and her putting was definitely helping her, but she still managed to blow up on one of her 2 days to finish toward the bottom. She's got to learn to be more consistent...and then she might be able to do something worthwhile on the LPGA tour.
