Re: Michelle Wie 24/7

Leaguegolf,
I have known for some time that she would play no men's events until certain circumstances were met ie. performance in women's events. Why the Wie's haven't made any official comment on this I do not know. I suspect it is because people would be overanalysing her performances and saying, was that performance good enough that she could play a mens event next etc.
Also, you might like to note that the Wie's have never made any official announcement regarding strategy or types of events she would play. The only announcements that have been made is that she will play X event at X time. And that is all you will continue to get. The next announcement is likely to be that she will play the Fields Open.

MW needs to do something special in golf to refocus our attention on her. Other than RodneyC, what reason would anyone have to care about her? She was a "promise" for awhile who captured the imaginations of both America and corporate America, not to mention other MW hopefuls around the world. IMO she did what lots of young movie stars do......they start to believe the hype disseminated by their own publicists!! Then they begin the long journey into obscurity because they are so busy looking for paparazzi and exposure that they forget what got them there in the first place. MW needs to embrace obscurity for awhile.....get back on the range and figure some things out...then take them to the course and put up some numbers. Please don't hit me with the litany of injuries that she has had to endure. There are plenty of golfers who have come back to excel after injury.

Why do you believe Wie "had no intention of playing the Sony" given the fact that there has been no announcement from Wie (before Sony made their announcement) stating she had no such intention? Wie may have had no such intentions but to say that after the fact is very convenient.

You've answered your own question really. And she has been doing exactly what you said, ie practicing away out of the spotlight, and she will come back to excel after injury. Her earlier problem was that she tried to come back and excel during injury, which wasn't a very good idea.

I didn't just say it after the fact. I said it two months ago.

Here is a post I made from November 2nd:

Playing mens events are not in her plans at the moment. I can provide an alert when that changes if you want, and maybe leaguegolf can put a blinking red light around the forum as a sort of warning.
But for the next while, you needn't worry about her playing any mens event.
Wie at Sony?

Two months later, Leadbetter said pretty much the same thing. I don't make many such comments because I don't know very much about her schedule, but when I make a claim, you can be sure that I am 100% sure about the facts.

A) That would be difficult, seeing as I've been here 6 months, and

B) ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Such an expert you are that you don't even know the exemption process on the PGA Tour.

Re: Michelle Wie 24/7

And by the way, I will say it here, for the record, for everyone to see:

Michelle Wie will never get another sponsor's invite to play on the PGA Tour. Ever.

Her previous manager was VP of title sponsor relations and marketing for the PGA Tour when he joined William Morris to manage Wie, and his wasn't exaxctly complimentary of the Wie clan when he quit. He is now back with the Tour, and don't look for him to put in the good word for Michelle. He was replaced by Greg Nared, who led Nike's efforts to sign Wie, and less than a year after he left Nike to manage her, he gave up and quit as well in a rather acrimonious split.

The Wie's have burned a lot of bridges in the past 2-3 years (notice Dad's back on the bag again? They can't even find someone willing to caddy for her), and they certainly don't have any of friends inside the Tour.

So you heard it here first: her days of PGA Tour invites are over.

To RodneyC and Tour Insider: I've enjoyed reading comments from both of you guys. You both seem to have an "insiders' take on golf and I find your posts informative and interesting.

My sister used to play this game on me when we were kids - when I had something she really wanted but knew I'd never give her, she would invariably say, "That? I never wanted it anyway." (then she'd stick her tongue out at me ) The trick was (from her end) to relegate the object in question to less importance, thereby robbing me of the satisfaction of having something she wanted; it's called reverse psychology. But it was easy for her to turn the table on me because she knew I wasn't going to give it to her anyway, no matter what, so what did she have to lose by saying she didn't want it?

Same kind of thing here. It was only after Sony announced that she wasn't getting an invite that the Wie camp said she never wanted one anyway. How convenient. Maybe Michelle will stick her tongue out as well.

This coming from the #1 Wie fanboy. I like one of her most recent interviews in which she stated that in 2007 she learned how to grind it out. I'm sorry but I didn't realize that quitting 3/4 through a round, constantly changing the story about an "injury", and accepting sponsor invitations into tournaments represented grinding it out.

I thought grinding it out would be playing developmental tours, monday qualifying, or playing your way onto the tour through Q School. You know like EARNING your way onto the tour.

I only wish I could send my daughter to Stanford since their academic standards are obiously like you know high.

Well, apparently she won't be majoring in English. She may want to consider an editor for future published ruminations. And you know I love your girl Rodney, but that was pretty brutal.

I hope her golf swing is in better shape than her communication skills. I've always wondered about that though. Here's a bright young lady being paraded around the world to sell not only her golf but whatever else her high rolling sponsors want her to peddle. You'd think someone would've put her in a public speaking class along the line somewhere.

From the article:
Quote:
On Not Playing in the Sony Open in 2008:
It’s kind of sad that I'm not home right now in general. You know, it’s been a long time since I have not been home, you know, going away to college and all that, but it’s OK, life goes on and unfortunately I’m not going to play in the Sony Open. Like I said, I’m not going to play until I’m 100 percent ready, but you know hopefully I’m going to be able to play there again sometime soon.
It doesn't sound like SHE wasn't planning to play the Sony this year.

She obviously wanted to, but you know, she wasn't like, you know, healthy enough, you know. Maybe you know she'll you know be ready you know by next year, you know?

The excuse for her speaking skills (or lack thereof) have always been...she's just 14 (or 15 or whatever). She's now in college. She really needs to work on that going forward. When you read or hear other young players on the LPGA tour interviewed, it doesn't read/sound like that.

Umm, like, yah there is the Stanford Mall right around the corner so I can leave campus and like go shopping for new stuff and my new roomates can go and maybe we can shop together cuz we're like real tight and I'm not a celebrity on campus because ya know how it is when you play golf and I want to have no pressure so I can heal my wrist and so no one makes me feel like the pressure like Tiger had when he was here and my parents can buy me stuff ya know.. I'm like so happy if I'm left alone to study and hang out and stuff.

etc. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

BTW, for you guys who don't live here, the Stanford Shopping Center really is right next to the University.

Can you even read?
Rodney produced a link where he said two months ago that she wouldn't play the Sony Open, whether invited or not.
He didn't wait until she wasn't invited to say she didn't want it anyway.

I don't know if you need better reading skills or better comprehension skills.

Okay, this is obviously just a Wie Bashing forum. What have her speaking skills got to do with anything. She speaks like any other 18 year old anyway. If you listen to Paula Creamer, she says "YA KNOW" about 3 times every sentance.
Why don't you listen to this, if you want to hear some "YA KNOW" babble from the queen of "YA KNOW", who is 21 years old by the way.

If you improve some of your own reading and comprehension skills by taking the time to read more of Golfrewound than just the last couple of posts in this thread. Or at the very least, if you read more of our Wie threads before you make such a statement, you'll discover that we offer a wide variety of discussion on a vast number of topics, and we're not just a Wie bashing forum. I will give you credit for being a typical Wie fan though. Rather than admit, or discuss, an area where Wie could stand to improve, you deflect the issue toward another player. I'm not sure what Ms Creamer's speech habits have to do with Wie but we'll be glad to discuss Ms Creamer in another thread.

I'll tell you what it has to do with Ms Creamer. It is about hypocrites.
You and your clique expect Ms Wie to be MS Perfect in every way, and attack her for anything. Yet if the other players are the very same, you say nothing about them.

Why would Ms Wie improve her speech so quickly anyway. She is just a young girl and it is refreshing that she speaks like a young girl. If she spoke the Queen's English, I have no doubt that you would be insulting her for being too proper and stuck up. One of the reasons I support her is that she is so normal and natural in the way she talks, despite her great talent for golf.
