Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

.

Yesterday I played nearby Pine Ridge golf club in Surrey for the first time. The course itself is only about a 15 minute drive away from where I live, but I`d never played it before...go figure . I didn`t want to play the course, as there are so many other courses nearby, that I thought I`d rather play! Anyhow, after been press-ganged into playing the course, I was really impressed .....Pine Ridge is a public course, but it looks`n`feels like a private course...similar to other nearby gems like Sunningdale, Swinley Forest, Camberely Heath, Wentworth and The Berkshire.

Despite being a new(ish) course, it felt like an old Harry Colt designed course (like the ones listed above). It is by far the best public course I`ve ever had the pleasure to play, and I can`t wait to go back there! Admittedly, the sun was shining, there was no wind, the green fees were very reasonable, and the course wasn`t busy....all factors which make a good impression. But the course even had it`s own bowling alley too , should your golf get rained off !

The course is very tight, and you have to drive the ball straight. However, even if you are a bit wayward off the tee then at least you usually find your ball as the trees, rather than any rough are the main problem! Every hole was a pictureseque challenge, but imo the back nine was/is the better of the the two nines. Anyhow, I was really impressed with the course and facilities.....and wouldn`t bother joining an expensive course, if you`re quite content playing the same course each week....as Pine Ridge has everyting going for it! Although I hear it`s too busy, come the weekends, which might be a problem for some!

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

I played nine holes here recently, as my my brother-in-law lives nearby. I thought it a fairly enjoyable track - decent greens, interesting holes.

I would disagree that it is on a par with the local famous clubs, but for a public track it is well above average.

...yes I`d agree with that. I do however feel that Pine Ridge is in a similar ilk to the other named courses.....the layout, the sites, and smell of the course....if not the length, difficulty, and sheer exclusivity of the other courses.

Heaven knows what the annual fees of Sunningdale and Wentworth are? But if you want a down-sized, reduced, condensed......and shrunk version of those courses, then Pine Ridge on a sunny day is a crackin` little public course, that you could be quite easily fooled into believing is a private course/club, if you didn`t know beforehand.

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

Looks like I will be playing the full 18 holes next weekend, I'll post my thoughts afterwards.

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

I played this course again today. I thought that the kids would all be back at school today, but apparently they`re not back there until tomorrow . There are too many of them on this course, and they play far too slowly imo . Small children should be elsewhere....preferably cleaning the insides of chimneys, like in the good old days for example .

As for the course itself JungleJ, I`d say the back nine are all very well designed holes imo, much better than the front nine.....but.....the course is just too crowded, and will probably be even worse at the weekend. There aren`t many members at my home course, so maybe I`m just not used to playing on such a busy course!

It is a shame, because apart from the courses greedy owners....everything else there seems to `ticks all the right boxes`, for the modest greenfee you are asked to pay. Personally I`d rather pay more for my round of golf, if it meant the tee-off times were then able to be spaced further apart.

Sounds like you're having a difficult time "blending in." That's odd.......for a chameleon.

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

Yes I am used to playing private clubs too - I have just resigned from Chipstead as I am not getting to play enough to justify the cost. I have worried about whether Pine Ridge will be brutally slow. Fortunately I am playing with my brother in law and we enjoy playing together regardless of pace or how well we are playing. I'm looking forward to it, although the national final of the charity competition I am in is more exciting in prospect (Sept 28th)

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

So I played here last weekend - 1.31 pm tee time but it felt like we pretty much had the course to ourselves. We let one two ball come through because they were steaming along, otherwise there was no waiting and no one pushing.

So it did feel like a private course. The conditioning was OK, the greens were nothing to write home about either way and the fairways were fine.

The back nine has some pretty good golf holes - the 11th is a bit weak (straight 294 yard par 4) and 18 is pretty average, but holes like 15 and 16 are excellent.

At £31 for a weekend tee time it is excellent value. I am looking forward to another round there.

Re: Pine Ridge Golf Club, Surrey.

I played here again this spring and enjoyed it again. I've got a tee time booked for Saturday afternoon (18 holes then the Ryder Cup!) this weekend. Quite looking forward to it. It's not exactly Wentworth but it IS a fine golf course.

Apparently Crown Golf now own it and they are improving the whole experience. But green fee is still reasonable at £31 on the weekend.
