St Pierre Golf Club - Chepstow, Wales

I had the opportunity to play the Old Course at St Pierre last week, in the national final of a large charity golf event.

The venue is owned and run by Marriott, the hotel chain. The course did host some European Tour events a few years ago. Sadly it is nowhere near Tour quality at this time.

It's just over 7000 yards from the back tees, and in this layout the pros would eat it up. Even the longer par 4's wouldn't require the pros to hit driver to get in decent position.

We played from the daily tees, par 71 over 6500 yards. I more or less played to handicap, although the organisers took my scorecard before I could get everything noted down.

Course condition is generally decent - it is definitely a hotel course though, some signs of wear and tear and a few dodgy greens. But the fairways were in good shape and the rough was pleasantly playable. Greens were only average, although some players thought they were lightning quick.

Worth a visit, overall, if you are nearby, but then again Celtic Manor is less than half an hour away.
