Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Just curious if anyone has experience selling on Ebay? I just sold some clubs this week and my son couldn't believe why people would want to pay as much for the clubs as they sold for? I think it may be that they get caught up in the 'getting a winning bid' that they lose sight of what they just paid vs. what the item is worth?, especially for a used item that is correctly described and has multiple pictures showing imperfections. For instance, I put up a beat up Vokey spin-milled wedge, covered with scratches, for $5 and it sold for $40.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

I've wondered the same thing for the last few years, not just with golf items, but things like computers and electronics. So often I see items listed on eBay with a price greater than I can go down to the store and buy them, not even considering the overblown shipping many eBay seller gouge people with.

I recently bid on a TaylorMade r7 hybrid. There was about 5 hours left in the auction, current bid was $29, seller was charging $15 S&H. I bid a max of $50, which with S&H would end up costing me $65, saving me about $15 over what they were going for in local stores. I didn't bother tracking it, as that was as much as I was going to bid. The thing sold for $105! I couldn't believe it. The seller had an eBay store you could go to and pay $89 plus $15 for the S&H without even bidding! If I knew I could get that kind of result with most items, I'd be selling most of what I own on eBay.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

I have noticed myself that some items go for more than they are really worth but if you set out from the start with a figure in your mind then there are some amazing bargains to be had! I am playing with a set of Macgregor Tourney MTs that were in immaculate condition (still are) off ebay for £65($125) which included shipping and I am playing just as well with them as my I3s which as you can imagine cost a lot more!
I guess some people just get caught up in a bidding frenzy or something and don't want to miss out on an item as it were?

GolfSavage...believe me, I sold 3 items and would have been happy getting what I put them on sale for (half of what they got bid up to) lol.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Yes, I did that for two recent purchases. I got a Nike Sumo Sasquatch 460 Plus a TaylorMade Dual Rescue (#3) for a total of $75 (+ $14 shipping). The TaylorMade was as nice as the one I bought (#4) a few months earlier, new, for $230, and I got the driver to boot. I bet I can put the driver back up and get back over $100. Speaking of which, my son's 2005 Callaway FT-3, which we put on at $55, just closed at $113. Like you said, you have to set a price and stick to it...you may lose a bunch, but the one you get may likely be a nice deal.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

I just sold my 4 year old Cleveland Launcher 460 for $107 (w/ shipping) and was really expecting to get around 70 for it. I started the bidding out at $50 and was just going to let it go for whatever it went for and to my surprise, the last hour or so a couple people got in a bidding war and it stopped at $107.

You can really find some great deals on eBay, but you can also get ripped off. Like was mentioned before in the thread, people just get caught up in the thrill of winning the item and having the highest bid. I won't buy anything on eBay unless I can get it for a significant discount off the store price.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

the short answer is that most ppl are dumb and lazy. They don't want to do the research on find what the fair price is.
Its just the nature of ebay now. I find it pretty difficult to actually find a good deal on ebay anymore. i bought my first set of Wilson boxed set of club of Ebay for $80 shipped. this was the same thing u could get at Target or Walmart for $250-300. Hard to find deals like that nowadays. Its cluttered with listing from E-store's and when u find a good listing and do your proxy bid, its frustrating to know some ppl are satisfied just if they are able to snipe your bid and they don't care if they overpay.

Are you sure the club didn't come with a better shaft or something? If it didn't, then well, people are stupid, what else can I say?

But I still love Ebay. I got a brand new V2 shaft for $30 once. I stuck in my Burner, and couldn't be happier.. and to think I was about to spend $85 on the same shaft in Golfsmith.. HA! I don't think so!

Ebay is just wierd like that.. I've seen things that are worth a fortune, sell for nothing, and then seen other things that are worthless sell for bundles. Ya'll should check out the totally bizarre section sometime- I once saw a Walmart bag sell for 13 grand on there..

I'm turning into an Ebay addict, selling anything that isn't nailed down!! Even my dog looks scared now when I walk by with the digital camera (he thinks I'm going to put him on Ebay, lol).
Just sold these in the past 10 days, some of which have been in our 'golf closet' for 1-2 yrs (could have gotten a better value earlier):

-LH Callaway Heavenwood #3H Hybrid Graphite-Firm - Mint - $35.10
-RH Ping i3 Fairway 3-wood 12-degrees Stiff/Steel - $33.00
-RH Callaway Fusion FT-3 Tour 9.5* Neutral Aldila - $113.00
-LH Titleist 983K 9.5-deg Fujikura Stiff LH driver - $63.00
-RH Titleist 60-degree spin-milled wedge - $40.00

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Something that surprises me more about people selling and buying is those who are willing to trade their clubs in at retail stores. I wanted to sell my Callaway X460 a few months ago and wanted to get a Hyper X. I went by the local Roger Dunn and hit a few Hyper X drivers in the net and was actually willing to buy it there. I asked how much they'd give me for the X460 and they told me $25! I told them "I'll think about it" and left immediately. I listed the driver on eBay and it sold for $175. Instead of buying the retail model, I went ahead and bought a Tour model with a Fujikura Speeder shaft and I still paid less on for it custom made than I would have with my trade in at Roger Dunn.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Just sold my 14th club on Ebay (all within last 1.5 months), the latest was a 4 yr old Odyssey White Hot #1 in v.good condition for $50 (which makes up for the TaylorMade r5 Dual TYPE D 10.5* Mas2 55 Reg driver I just picked up for $46 and in excellent condition) . Dang, all the clubs I've sold have sat in my 'golf closet' for at least 2 years since last being used, switched out for new clubs....probably could have reaped much more than the $650 that's now in my paypal account if I would have traded them out right off 1-2 yrs ago when I got the new clubs. Amazing...and I'm only half-way through our excess clubs.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Well, I must say I've got some great clubs from Ebay without paying hundreds!!

Sold my Callaway X-460 Tour for $73 and got a Nike Sasquatch 460 & Taylormade Dual Rescue for $75 (a combo deal), just sold the the Sasquatch for $55 and picked up a TaylorMAde r5 draw driver for $46....both of these Taylormade's I'm hitting superb!!! It's great that I didn't buy them for hundreds of $$ and perhaps not like/hit them well.

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

Well, I put up a 'beat-up' spin-milled Vokey up for $5 that sold for ~$35, with 4 clear pictures of the face and top showing that it was beatup and even said so in the description....the buyer was happy with it.... go figure. I wouldn't have paid $35 for sure even though a new one probably goes for $140.

I'm actually using one of the two vokeys I bought....Another reason people might pay more is because of their location. The town I grew up in didn't have many stores
and ebay would be a great to buy some equip.
I know some gun auction site are selling guns for premium prices...

Re: Selling clubs on Ebay...why do people pay more?

I just sold a Hogan Apex wedge for $81 for which I originally paid $35 in "very good condition" from Callaway's ebay site. I guess it all only matters to the buyer and if they think they are getting a good deal.
