Things to know when hitting blades
So I finally caved and purchased a set of Mizuno MP-60's. I just cant seem to ignore the sheer beauty of these clubs. Any ways, besides the fact that they will be a little less forgiving, are there any things I need to be aware of?

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
What clubs are you switching from, this will give an idea of what you were dealing with before.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
The Mizunos are going to have a slightly lower ball flight and with less offset, you will be able to control the flight and trajectory of the ball better. While less forgiving than the irons that you had, they are a relatively forgiving blade style iron.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
It's not a guarantee that it will be lower, it depends on angle of attack and ball position, so you may not notice it being too much lower. That was a generalization based on the characteristics of those two sets of irons.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
Thanks a lot Bigvivec. Yeah, I was a little intimidated by the smaller heads, and all the talk about how HARD they were to hit. I hope these irons will help me score better, and help me get to the next level with my developing swing.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
Look at it the other way...with a bigger head it is harder to hit the ball because you're not sure where to swing that bigger face, or you overswing convinced that you can't miss making good contact as anywhere on the face "counts", smaller head you only have one choice...middle!

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
.
The MP-60's really aren't "blades". They could best be described as a "Player's Cavity Back". I know it's technically called a Player's Club and it is. But Mizuno refers to it as a "Cut Muscle Cavity". According to Mizuno, (and I quote), "The Grain Flow Forged MP-60 is 4% larger and has a 10% larger sweet area when compared to its outstanding Cut Muscle counterpart, the MP-32. The Cut Muscle design in the MP-60 delivers a slightly higher ball flight in the long irons, and a mid trajectory in the scoring irons, while the Cut Muscle design precisely positions the COG in each club for a consistent and predictable ball flight." They're beautiful irons regardless of what they're called and Mizuno always puts out a great product. Coming from the Cally X-14's the MP-60's will definitely feel different, but as a longtime blade/forged man myself, I'll bet you'll love those things to death! Good luck with them! -JP

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
The MP-60's are actually cut muscles, not "blades".
I would say all you need to know is whether or not you can work them better and ultimately play better with them. That's about all that matters. ENJOY!!! |

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
All I can tell you is I went from Big Berthas to my Yonex vmass tour forged cavity back which are a little thinner than the MP 60's and I love the change. I was getting too sloppy on contact because of the mass around the face on the Callaways and all it took was 3 swings and I was hitting the button again. You will definitely like the workability. My flight was a little lower but drastic changes in the flight will have to come from the swing.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
Well, just got back from the course today. Didn't miss hit a SINGLE iron. Every one struck pure and solid, with a perty divot! I am really impressed with these sticks. Mizuno gets an A+ from me.

Re: Things to know when hitting blades
Glad you enjoyed them! I don't think it is the club as much as it is the player using them. Some people just can't hit close to the sweet spot continuously and the forged clubs without the extra forgiveness built in will make you pay. A true blade would tell if your spot on but I haven't seen any real true blades in a long time as most manufacturers went to muscle back blades or cavity back forged. There is definitely a sweet feel to the forged though when pured and you get plenty of feedback if you wonder off from the sweet spot very far.
