For those in colder climes...

...what have you been doing in the off season to prepare/practice for a good 2007 golf season?

Me, embarrassingly, nothing. I haven't even picked up my putter in over two months to hit a few putts on the carpet.

Re: For those in colder climes...

Um..i was chipping a stress ball at my door the other day if that counts..besides that..nothing. I lack the high ceilings needed to take a full swing, and -15* windchill makes doing nothing inside feel real good.

Re: For those in colder climes...

Chipping a ball from the carpet into the easy chair in the family room...

I wouldn't call it practice.... just desperation.

... and I only do it when my wife isn't home.

Re: For those in colder climes...

I swing a short heavy club mostly on weekends, and just my arms (with my hands in a more or less normal golf grip) most other days, to stay in the groove. I often use a mirror. My best swing revelations and improvements have come indoors!

I had good intentions of becoming a great putter this winter, practicing on the carpet, but so far I haven't devoted any time to it. There is no excuse for that!

Re: For those in colder climes...

I am fortunate enough to be able to take a full swing in my basement so I have set up a mirror and am working on my posture and staying in my swing and not picking up. I also try to make 60 putts a day startint at 2' and working back to 8'. My wife thinks I am looney.

I normally don't do much golf related stuff during winter, except post on here and look at clubs online.

I do a full array of shortgame shots upstairs and then in the livin room when pa isnt around I take full swings with my PW. Just enough room to miss the ceiling fan.

Re: For those in colder climes...

When I lived up north, I used a Momentus to keep the muscles loose. Would cip in the living room to try and keep a sense of feel. Lots of putting on the carpet as well.

Re: For those in colder climes...

I'll basically work on the set-up position and take-away. Maybe take it to the top and keep those positions "memorized".

Putting on the carpet or hitting into the nets at the golf shop on lunch break.

Re: For those in colder climes...

Mostly read about golf... it's almost as much a hobby as playing is for me. But too, I try to do something every day that will help me get out of the gates quicker when the season starts. I enjoy reading books on the mental aspects, involving strategy. I don't really get into technical reading on the swing that much, although I am reading Jack's "Golf My Way" currently.

Outside of reading, I'm trying to maintain my recent resolution of reducing my girth and increasing my shoulder turn.

The winter months are the best time to get your clubs in top shape for the upcoming season. Getting new grips put on, getting the loft and lie angles checked, etc. When the season starts, you're ready to go.

You must have a BIG living room, because I hit my PW about 165..and if you get similar distance, then...I see bad things happening!
Good Luck!

Re: For those in colder climes...

I have been lessons for the past two months at a heated range on Tuesday nights. I usually go back once or twice a week for practice and putt on the carpet every night for about 10 minutes. I have a very understanding wife who prefers I do this to drinking/smoking/drugs. She still thinks I am crazy though.

Re: For those in colder climes...

Used to putt on the carpet in the basement. This year, the putter is at home, but given i'm 2000 miles east of that, it really isn't doing any good. I'm going to have a bit of work to do come April to get my game back in gear.

Re: For those in colder climes...

I cut off a redneck cup out of paper, and I'll set in my living room, at take short 12 yards chips at it..good way to practice for slow greens.

Re: For those in colder climes...

Not much of anything. Around march I usually start some indoor putting and outdoor chipping provided there is no snow. When the ranges open I work on full swings to get the kinks out before i hit the links

Re: For those in colder climes...

I used to hit plastic balls upstairs (our living room has vaulted ceilings) until we got out flat screen lcd. I've tried hitting the range, but I got a neck problem that's starting to annoy the whatchamacallit out of me, so no full swings for now. I've also done a bit of putting, but that's only to maintain something that resembles a putting stroke.

Re: For those in colder climes...

If there is no snow on the ground, I bundle up with under armour, a winter hat, winter gloves and a sweater or something heavier and go hit balls. If I can't I practice my swing in a mirror.

I do that too if we have no snow, but alas, we have snow.
