Here are links to three great golf courses in and around Birmingham, Alabama these courses are only a short drive form the Birmingham Airport, these courses are well worth playing if you are going to be in this area.

Hi guys...I live in Birmingham and have played all of these courses....they are all special.

Limestone Springs is listed on Golf Digest's Top 100 Public Courses in the U.S. Interestingly for all of the attention given to the Robert Trent Jones courses in the state, Limestone Springs is higher rated than them all. This is a beautiful course with very hilly terrain and has long vistas on several holes.

Farmlinks is a unique operation. It is owned and operated by a family in the fertilizer business. They are one of the largest producers of fertilizer for golf courses in the U.S. and use their course as a demonstration site for various turfgrasses. So you will see some different grasses on different holes as part of their operation. Farmlinks has an unusual pricing policy. You will pay them $100 to come there. For this $100, you can play nine holes, 18 holes, 36 holes or more daylight permitting. Also included in the $100 is a nice lunch and unlimited non-alcoholic drinks on the course. When the cart girl comes around, just load up on whatever you want and give her a tip....

I played Ross Bridge for the first time only a few months ago and fell in love with it. It is the crown jewel of the RTJ Trail and the most expensive course as well. If you are looking for a resort weekend, the Marriott Ross Bridge Resort Hotel is really great with a large spa...at this time, it is the 3rd longest course in the world, playing at 8100 yards from the tips...

I played Ross Bridge last April and was quite taken with it. It was recently listed as one of the 50 most difficult courses in the country. That is likely based mostly on length; the course itself isn't as difficult as they make it sound. It is a resort course, after all, and most of them are tough enough, but fair for the recreational golfer. I'm an 18 cap and shot in the 80's there. The longest holes are downhill, so they play shorter than their yardage. There are some difficult holes (#11, par 3 across a ravine to a smallish green, and # 16 par 5 with lots of bunkers come to mind). But for those of you thinking why spend $125 to play it when I'm just going to get beat up, and I can go a half mile down the road to Oxmoor Valley, also a RTJ Trail course, and play for about half that price, an example. I played both this course and the Raven at Sandestin, home of the Boeing Classic. Both of these courses host Champions tour events one week apart. The three day winning score at Ross Bridge was around -17, at Raven it was about -9 or -10. Ross Bridge is long and beautiful, but leaves you plenty of places to play from. Definitely worth a look.

Also mentioned was Oxmoor Valley, another RTJ Trail gem. I've only played 3 sites (4 courses, not including the adjunct Lakewood Golf Club at Point Clear which I've also played) on the trail, but I have to say, there probably isn't any bad golf on it. Oxmoor has 2 courses plus a par 3 course in the same area of Ross Bridge so the terrain is similar. The Ridge course plays along the ridge line of the mountain, and the Valley course sits lower. For someone like me from flat-land golf, it's quite the challenge and a lot of fun to play in the hills and mountains of Birmingham.

Glad to hear you think highly of Oxmoor Valley. My best friend and I are playing there in June, along with Capital Hill and Grand National. We will be playing both courses at each site each day. Last year we played Highlands, The Shoals, and Silver Lakes. 36 a day in the heat was kind of rough. I am going to be in better shape this year so my afternoon round doesn't suffer like last year.
I cannot say enough about what I have seen from RTJ Trail. From reservations, to the staff at the courses, to the golf itself, everything was exceptional. Especially the golf. 6 great rounds of golf for $129 total.....unbelievable. If I had to play any of the courses I have seen so far, I would probably play The Shoals courses again. Tremendously long (7900+ and 8092) and beautiful

Twin Lakes Golf Course Review

If any one should be in Huntsville, Alabama or Birmingham, Alabama (It is little harder to get there from Birmingham). Here is a course that is well worth checking out, if you are looking for a challenge this is the course a par 72 course that will give one a challenge. It is old course built in the early fifties it has a beautiful layout with a number of small lakes scattered about the course. The course has some rather narrow fairways in places with some very mature pines. The greens are undulating greens that are very well maintained for a public course the greens are bent grass greens and the fairways are just as well maintained. In the winter the fairways are a beautiful green with just the right firmness to give you a good roll but yet allow you to take a nice size divot. Summers here really bring out the beauty of this course with its many old trees. When you drive up to the club house it is a bit of a surprised it is old house when you walk inside the front room is filled with all types’ sorts’ memorabilia there is a display case with miniature college football stadiums and a glass display case filled with old Dr. Pepper soda bottles from the twenties through the sixties..

Here is another hidden gem in the Birmingham, Alabama area. This course is about three years old it is just now coming into it's full potential I played this course quite a bit after it first opened again if you happen to be in Birmingham and looking for a challenge this is a great course.

Halk all the course you review are no question very nice . Have you played Horse Creek . Green fee is 30.00 for the price it is the best course I have played in alabama . I need someone to play it with me . I shoot 90 to 95 . I am 55 married .

Never played Horse Creek is his the course I believe is between Birmingham, and Jasper of highway 78? My home course is Cullman Golf Course, I live about 25 minutes from there, Cullman is the one course that I play the most on my rotation of courses that I play.

Where I live within I would say driving distance of 30-45 minutes there are at least 25 courses that range in price form $25.00 to $80.00 plus. They are all nice courses even the $25.00 courses. The other nice thing is the weather there are very few days that I do not play year round ( my cut of point is 38º) if is below this I want play there are very few days that it will get to my cut off.

Here is a link to places to see and do in Alabama I think you will find the state to be one of those hidden gems. I think the northern part of the state is the prettiest but we also have a great coast line also. There are a lot to see and do hope you get the chance to see our great state.

Indian Pines is near the campus and lot of the students play there nice course somewhat inexpensive but a well kept course.

Auburn Links is a bit more upscale green fees with cart (if I remember correctly) is about $45.00, and around $30.00 after 2:00 PM. And then there are the really upscale courses one of those is Moores Mill private and very upscale. There is a very nice Robert Trent Jones course there.

My daughter use to be on the facility staff at the veterinary school at Auburn, Auburn is a very nice town pretty much typical college town.

Welcome to Alabama hope you enjoy your stay here and I think you will enjoy living in Auburn, my daughter really enjoyed it there and wants to move back.

Thanks again for the advice! Indian Pines is just a couple miles from here, and definitely in our price range lol, so that may be our new "home" course. However, my husband is absolutely miserable with his new job unfortunately, so this relocation may not work out for long, here.

We do love the town (I especially like being walking distance from the campus and it's library, lol!); very friendly people too. Only problem is being stuck in a bad, roach-infested apartment. Oh well, meets our needs at least, haha. We had to take something cheap as we are keeping our home until we find out if this is for us... even if we did want to sell, bad market back home now.

Welcome to Alabama. Sorry to hear the relocation may not work out for you guys, sure hope it somehow does work for you.

If you should have the time to get away for a long weekend may I suggest a trip to the Northern part of the state. Lake Guntersville is about 3 1/2 hours from Auburn great fishing, and golf. Here is a link to the Lake Guntersville State park Lodge and golf course. I play there several times during the year the Lodge and golf course are about 25 minutes from my home. The rates for the golf course is $30.00 green fees and cart.

Well, talk about timing... they just fired my husband. But, not as bad as it sounds-- actually gave him a good severance package considering the short time he was employed, and he has an interview back in Orlando next week; a few places down there are showing interest in him. I may end up staying here myself, though, if a University job comes through for me.
